In many African countries, the government provides assistance to political parties and candidates to help with their administration or election campaigns (International IDEA, 2024; Elin, Samuel, & Magnus, 2014). This support can come in the form of money, free or subsidized goods and services, or tax relief. For example, in Ghana, political parties and candidates receive an equal allocation of free airtime on state-owned media during election years. Additionally, the Electoral Commission of Ghana has previously provided vehicles to support political parties that met specific requirements (Ghanaweb, 2008).
